what is technical SEO?

last updated: July 18, 2026

Technical SEO is the infrastructure work that ensures search engines can crawl, index and correctly understand a website. It covers site speed and Core Web Vitals, mobile-friendliness, structured data, canonical and hreflang tags, XML sitemaps and robots.txt management. No matter how good the content is, it cannot rank without this technical foundation underneath it.

crawlability and indexability

The first question of technical SEO: can Googlebot reach the site and index the right pages? robots.txt governs which sections get crawled; the XML sitemap announces important URLs to search engines; the noindex tag marks pages that should stay out of the index. Inconsistent setups — pages listed in the sitemap but blocked by robots.txt, for example — are among the most common technical mistakes.

The canonical tag declares which version counts as the original when the same content lives on multiple URLs; hreflang ensures multilingual sites serve the right version for each language and region. Misconfigured, both split ranking signals across duplicate pages.

site speed, Core Web Vitals and mobile

Google measures page experience with real-user data. Core Web Vitals consists of three metrics: LCP (largest contentful paint) measures how fast the main content loads, INP (interaction to next paint) measures interaction responsiveness, and CLS (cumulative layout shift) measures visual stability. Because Google predominantly uses the mobile version for indexing (mobile-first indexing), flawless mobile performance is non-negotiable.

technical SEO checklist

The minimum conditions of a healthy technical foundation:

  • HTTPS and a secure server configuration
  • Consistent robots.txt, XML sitemap and noindex setup
  • Page speed that meets Core Web Vitals thresholds
  • Mobile-friendly, responsive design
  • Schema.org structured data markup
  • Correct canonical and — on multilingual sites — hreflang tags
  • Broken links and redirect chains cleaned up

frequently asked questions

what is the difference between technical SEO and regular SEO?
Technical SEO is the infrastructure layer of SEO: crawling, indexing, speed, mobile-friendliness and structured data. Content and keyword work belong to on-page SEO, and backlink earning to off-page SEO; the three together make up SEO as a whole.
how much do Core Web Vitals affect rankings?
Core Web Vitals are part of Google's page experience signals; less decisive than content quality, but a tiebreaker on closely contested queries. Their bigger effect is indirect: fast, stable pages produce lower bounce rates and higher conversion.
how often should a technical SEO audit run?
Always after major redesigns and migrations; in normal periods, a full audit each quarter plus an automated monthly crawl is a healthy rhythm. The crawl and indexing reports in Search Console should be monitored continuously.
do robots.txt and noindex do the same job?
No. robots.txt blocks crawling, yet a page can still get indexed if other sites link to it; noindex removes a page from the index, but the page must remain crawlable for the tag to be seen. The wrong combination — noindex on a blocked page — makes the tag invisible.
